New book: Contemporary Botanical Illustration with the Eden Project
This latest book by award-winning authors Rosie Martin and Meriel Thurstan gives an in-depth overview of the subject from the point of view of general art education. Most of the beautifully executed illustrations in the book are painted using a limited palette, demonstrating its potential to be highly developed and extremely inventive.  Comprehensive explanations are given as to how various colours are arrived at and much of the material is experimental and bold. Totnes Photographer at the Royal Academy
Photographer David Thurston has fulfilled an early ambition by having had two of his photographs selected for hanging in the 2008 Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition, the largest open show of contemporary art in the world.
From an entry of more than 10,000 only about 500 works, mostly paintings, are chosen from submissions by non-Academician members of the public.

David, who worked in Fleet Street before spending 20 years in China, says, "It is a rare honour and a quite a thrill: an ambition formed when I was 18 years old. This was my first try."

The summer exhibition, which has been held annually since 1768, runs until 17 August at Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1. RA web site

David Thurston will give a talk in the Barn Cinema at Dartington Hall, Totnes, Devon, on 14 July at 11.30 am as part of the Ways With Words Festival, and some of his photographs will be on display and for sale at the Cider Press Centre, Dartington from 11 July to 6 August.

Totnes Band in National Finals
Totnes Band will be the only brass band from Devon to compete in the National Finals in Harrogate in September against household names, like the Black Dyke and Grimthorpe Colliery, after achieving third place in the regional competition earlier this month.

They will have to raise their own costs of around £6000, to cover their transport and accommodation for the two-day final. Local people are being asked to support them by sponsoring a mile of their journey for a £2 donation.
